Joseph Smith dictated the Book of Mormon in 65 days… with no notes. 🤯
Could a 23-year-old with little formal education really dictate the Book of Mormon in about 65 working days… without notes or a rough draft?
Did you know that Joseph Smith dictated the Book of Mormon in about 65 working days with no notes and no rough draft? Joseph Smith was only 23 years old when he dictated the Book of Mormon. He had very little formal schooling and most of his education came from homeschooling and farmwork. Yet somehow he produced one of the most influential religious books in modern history. Before the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith had never published a book, never published a story, and never built a career as a writer.
There was no evidence that he had the experience necessary to create something this large and complex. The Book of Mormon contains over 250,000 words. That's longer than the New Testament, longer than the Quran, and longer than the first Harry Potter novel. If Joseph Smith was inventing a fake scripture just to convince people, why make it this long and this detailed? Historical records show that the Book of Mormon was translated in about 65 days of actual work.
Think about that. Over 250,000 words dictated in just weeks. Even experienced authors often spend years writing books far less complex than this. The Book of Mormon contains hundreds of characters, multiple civilizations, wars, prophecies, sermons, and detailed timelines. Yet, eyewitnesses said Joseph Smith dictated it without notes. His wife, Emma Smith, later said he had neither manuscript nor book to read from.
And when Joseph paused for meals or conversations, witnesses said he could later continue exactly where he left off without having the previous text read back to him. The Book of Mormon also taught ideas that were very unusual for Joseph Smith's time. It taught that Adam's fall was part of God's plan. It taught how Christ's atonement can not only forgive us, but change us. Passages like Elma 32, King Benjamin's sermon, and the allegory of the olive tree are still studied today for their depth and spiritual insight.
11 men testified that they saw the gold plates. Some later left the church, but none of them ever denied their testimony. Today, over 200 million copies of the Book of Mormon have been printed. Millions of people across the world say they prayed about it and received an answer from God for themselves. So, the question remains, how did a 23-year-old with little education dictate a book this large, this complex, this doctrinally deep, this quickly with no notes?
Ultimately, we don't have to turn to outside sources to find out if the Book of Mormon is true. All the evidences don't prove doctrine. But like Joseph Smith, we can follow the admonition of James in the Bible. When we lack wisdom, we can ask of God.
